15mm Colonials

These images are from September of 2010 - when I traveled to Charlotte to visit my brother Ben. One night we threw down a game of Black Powder - in the Sudan. He and I both are big fans of the Sudan. Ben's collection of miniatures is awesome and large - and still growing!

I remember little of the game that night, except that the rockets were pretty fun and crazy. Also, we didn't really finish the battle that night due to (1) beer drinking, (2) the late (early) hour and (3) scotch drinking.

So, I thought I'd finally get around to posting these images - I saw them this morning on a disk.

British WIP

Ok, here is the result of yesterday evening's work...some highlanders and standard bearers. Will finish up the highlanders today, you can see the spaces left on the stands for the remaining 4 models. I will send them off on these plain bases so that my brother can flock them to match his other units.

I won't base the standard bearers as he will add them into existing units. Also, I did not paint a cuff color on them so that he can do that to match the unit that the model moves into.

British Colonials - 15MM

Other than a few errands this morning, I got myself into the painting mood by preparing some scenery items for my brother's 15MM collection of British Colonials. He'll add some additional flocking to them when he gets them to help them blend into his collection. I hope that these will play well for him in both the Sudan and the Zululand.

First up is a group picture of the items. Some tents and a cattle pen. The tall tent on the base is intended to house either an officer vignette or a hospital vignette. The other tents are just to provide a target for the Queen's enemies and a base to defend for her soldiers. (Yes, that is a glass of Guinness in the back of the shot - one must be properly provisioned whilst painting!).

Next up is closer shot of the cattle pen. The cattle are removable so that Her Majesty's brave men can enjoy a little cover.

Last up are some common tents and a supply wagon. Who knows, perhaps this wagon - in a future tabletop battle - will be the source of the ammunition for the men. You know, keep it in camp where it is nice and safe, we can't keep ammo too close to the firing line! Why, it could get captured or wasted if it were there!

Death or Glory Boys

I just finished off the first group of Zulu War lancers for my brother...here they are. I also completed some more dervish "leader" types (not pictured). More to get painted this weekend. The figures are 15MM Old Glory.

Next: 28MM Colonials?

Well, I have been thinking that after I get enough 28MM ACW figures collected, that I want to get into 28MM Colonials next. I really like the Zulu War - no doubt fueled by seeing the movie Zulu when I was young.

When I see the Zulu War range of models offered by Empress Miniatures, I am just blown away. They are truly awesome.

I, like many, have done colonials before using the famous range of Ral Partha miniatures. While those are perfectly fine miniatures, the more recent releases have simply surpassed them in beauty and historical accuracy.

I am thinking that I'd collect a combination of metal and plastic miniatures. The bulk of the Zulu warriors would be plastics with all of the key or "character" miniatures being metal. The British and thier local allies would be mostly metal miniatures.

15MM Dervish

These are some of the miniatures I am painting for my brother. He has a tremendous collection of 15MM colonials around the wars in Sudan. I am painting some leader miniatures and British cavalry and some highlanders.
