Veterans Wars Weekend Mini-Con and Food

For the past several years, our local club has a 3-day mini-convention on the Veteran's Day weekend. Beginning tonight and ending at 5PM Sunday many club members will be putting on games.Including me.

Tomorrow afternoon I am running a Big Battle DBN tournament set in 1809. The players will be divided into 2 teams France and The Coalition. Then they go at it...each player will play in 3 battles. The battles are scenarios pre-set by me - not the standard "even-steven" stuff.

One of the draws I planned for players of the tournament is food. Another hobby of mine is Cajun cooking (being from New Orleans of course!). So, all of the players in the tourney get a free Cajun dinner. After all of the players are served, if there is any left over, the other club members can go at it after making a small donation to the club.

The menu? Chicken and Andouille Gumbo and Mini Muffalettas - with Olive Spread, of course. That way we can all enjoy a bowl of soup and a sandwich. A friend of mine is allergic to bell peppers so I made this batch of gumbo with out them...instead of the Trinity (bell peppers, onions and celery) I used the Mirepoix (onions, celery and carrots).

We New Orleanians are pretty obsessed with food, so of course, I have pictures to post! Enjoy them with your eyes, I'll be enjoying it with my mouth tomorrow!

  2. Oh how I miss the Gumbo Ya-Ya at Mr B's in NOLA!

I commend you on the proper serving style - keeping the rice separate until the last moment. The Yankees I live with up here in Maryland can get that concept and just throw the rice in while cooking - sacrilege!

Your muffalettas look straight out of Central Grocery.

    I am jealous!!!

  3. Nate, I look forward to both eating and gaming with you tomorrow. If only we could wash it down with a Dixie beer!

  4. Miles, really, while cooking? Jambalaya, sure...but Gumbo? It is - as you have said - sacrilege!

I only wish I had had the time to bake some real muffaletta bread - I had to "improvise" with some good rolls.
